Run by the folks who own the Los Mexicanos market next door and the taco truck in the parking lot, Casa Jimenez is a bright, gaudily colored restaurant with a secret weapon: possibly the best carnitas (pork browned in its own fat) in the East Bay. Like many carnitas specialists, Casa Jimenez claims to prepare these porky flavor bombs in the Michoacán style, but it’s one of the only places we know of that roasts its carnitas in the oven, resulting in meat that’s crispy, tender, fatty, and everything in between. Ask for the fantastic corn tortillas, which are super-thick and almost too hot to touch, with an intense corn fragrance. Also worth ordering: the comically huge chimichanga (a deep-fried burrito) and the smooth and smoky house-made flan.
