Drama, Romance
Choice ingredients – novelist Patricia Highsmith, writer-director Todd Haynes, actress Cate Blanchett – but this soap-operatic story of thwarted lesbian love in 1950s Manhattan leaves us cold as a January dog house. Blanchett, as the upper-middle-class title character who hits on a meek shop girl (Rooney Mara), has a vampire-ish air about her; her lust is as accessorized as her outfits. Mara’s Therese is the more interesting character, a work in progress with options in her life, but neither Highsmith’s narrative (adapted from her novel The Price of Salt) nor Haynes’ meticulous period staging delves much beneath the surface. Even their orgasms are smothered. Costarring Sarah Paulson and Kyle Chandler (118 min.).
