According to statistics from AAA and the US Government, among others, it costs more than $8,000 more a year to own and operate a mid-range, gas efficient priced car than to use public transportation exclusively. (Including the initial cost of the car factored in over the average amount of time it's owned.) No one in San Francisco needs to own a car in order to get to and from work and do the ordinary business of life. Can Oakland say the same? I don't think so. Add $8,000 to what you pay annually for rent in Oakland and I think you'll see that living in San Francisco isn't that much more expensive -- if at all. I agree Oakland has many great features, but a transportation system that makes car ownership unnecessary isn't one of them. So live in Oakland for the cool people and culture, but not to save money.
