Comedy drama
Viggo Mortensen dominates the action as a single father, raising his six children as leftist survivalist literary warriors who live in the forest and hunt deer with knives. But it’s not quite as grim as it sounds, as the headstrong dad and the questioning kids take a road trip to get in touch with the rest of the world, including disapproving relatives Frank Langella, Kathryn Hahn, and Steve Zahn. The realizations that dawn on the Mortensen character’s face as the trip winds down are especially well conceived by writer-director Matt Ross – another superb characterization to add to Mortensen’s catalog. Also with George MacKay as the number one son, who learns how to fall in love. Broad in its appeal yet specific in its observations (116 min).
