Michael Moore gets down to basics. After targeting guns, health care, wars for oil, and various individual industries, America’s most popular and influential maker of documentaries examines — in his idiosyncratic, anecdotal way — the concept of putting profit above all else, from the perspective of a former factory worker who has seen his hometown destroyed by corporate greed and stinginess. It’s probably Moore’s most somber doc, a gazetteer of misery trimmed with wretched excess and informed, so he says, by Moore’s admiration for his Roman Catholic teachers, most of whom condemn the unfairness of the system themselves. One of Moore’s best, alongside Roger & Me. Written and directed by Moore, who co-produced with his wife, Anne Moore (120 min.).
