There are some interesting touches in Rough and Tumble's staging of Candide, such as a flying machine of eggbeaters and parasols. Unfortunately there are nearly as many irritating bits, like playing a utopian civilization as babbling kindergartners. Using Len Jenkin's 1982 adaptation of Voltaire's 1759 philosophical satire, in which the titular innocent clings to his dogmatic optimism despite ample evidence that the world is unjust, the intimate production in the Berkeley City Club is fast-paced when people aren't reciting their woes, but the endless mishaps soon become wearying. A few performances in the ensemble stand out, such as Janet Keller's Old Woman and éowynMader's blasé Paquette, but many of the intentionally non-naturalistic performances come off as amateurish, and the overall atmosphere is like a deranged middle-school pageant. Through September 21 at the BerkeleyCity Club (2315 Durant Ave., Berkeley) or 510-499-0356.
