Dark comedy, Drama
The travails of a small-town Irish priest (Brendan Gleeson, in championship form) get run through the “McDonagh Meat Grinder” in this viciously topical dark comedy by writer-director John Michael McDonagh (The Guard). Everyone in Father James Lavelle’s parish despises him, and one unknown man even threatens his life, but the good father steadfastly turns the other cheek to a host of provocations. Among the angry villagers: Chris O’Dowd (as the local butcher), Dylan Moran (a drunk landlord), Pat Shortt (surly bartender), Aidan Gillen (atheist doctor) and Father Lavelle’s very own daughter, played by Kelly Reilly. If all this reminds us of a typical scenario by the filmmaker’s brother, playwright Martin McDonagh, we could say that perversity runs in the family. Father Lavelle, with a mighty assist by actor Gleeson, is the sharpest character either McDonagh has created, a good man to whom bad things happen (105 min.).
