Buy Curious: The Elephant Sale … for Real This Time!

Fri, Feb 29, 2008 at 2:45 PM

So we were a little excited about the White Elephant Sale last week, so much so that we posted about it a week early. Well it's really happening this weekend. And thankfully, it looks like the weather will cooperate so you won't have to wait in line in the rain. But the monstrous sale, as great as it is, has some stiff competition this weekend, including Noise Pop's "Pop and Shop" Expo, the Alameda Antique Fair, and the design fair Chillin' the night before. How to choose? Click on oh shopping faithful …

To Save or Spend?
Dubya may not believe the recession exists, but shopping trends tell another story. According to the Contra Costa Times, discount retailer Ross, based in Pleansanton, actually saw an increase in its January sales as other retailers have seen the opposite trend, apparently indicating that people are seeking greater deals as fear of a recession looms. (I witnessed a small mob gathered outside of Alameda's Salvation Army this morning waiting for it to open.) The government hopes you'll continue spending your hard-earned dollars rather than hold onto them once you get your tax rebate, but some fear folks will just pay off debts or bury them into a savings account. So, are you gonna go on a spending spree when you get your refund? And if so, what're ya gonna buy?
