Budget Crisis: Think the Dems are Bad? Check This Out

Time for another one of those cognitive dilemmas, in which we're forced to remember the times when we're thankful Don Perata's running the show up in Sacramento. Readers may recall that we're stuck in this little thing known as The Worst Budget Crisis In California History, and Republican senators have repeatedly rejected a compromise plan, supported by both Perata and Schwarzenegger, because it temporarily raises sales taxes. So what's the Republican alternative?

Funny you should ask, because they just put theirs up for a vote. According to the Los Angeles Times, "The Republican plan would have avoided sales tax increases, originally proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, through cuts in welfare grants, child-care programs, college financial aid, the salaries of in-home care workers who tend to the elderly and disabled, and dozens of small programs. The plan also would have accelerated borrowing against the lottery beyond what Schwarzenegger and Democrats have proposed."

Screw the poor, students, and elderly invalids, and borrow against the lottery. That's leadership for ya. Fortunately, Perata and the Dems shitcanned that deal in short order. But according to the Times, The Don has just about had it with the loyal opposition's games: "Near the end of Monday's debate, Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata (D-Oakland) loudly berated the Republicans, saying that a few have privately outlined to Schwarzenegger the terms under which they would defect from their caucus, but that those demands keep changing."

"'Why don't you stand up and tell me what you need!' Perata yelled. 'I'm done guessing.'"
