Guffaws up the wazoo, literally, as Sacha Baron Cohen’s ridiculously gay Austrian scene-maker tries to achieve stardom any way he can: crashing a fashion show, putting the moves on Congressman Ron Paul, joining the Alabama National Guard, and most pathetically, flaunting his adopted/purchased African baby in front of a visibly outraged black TV talk show audience. Director Larry Charles and Cohen — with the help of four other writers — employ the usual Borat and Ali G m.o.: trick unsuspecting squares into buying his persona, then push them into embarrassing situations. Cohen runs out of gags quickly. The cheapest laughs are the funniest, of course. The “stage parents” sequence is one of the most disheartening pieces of documentary ever made. Further proof that satire is almost impossible in 2009. With Paula Abdul, Snoop Dogg, Bono, and Swedish actor Gustaf Hammarsten as Brüno’s love-smitten personal assistant, Lutz. Umlauts all over the place (83 min.).
