Bruce Cockburn with Jenny Scheinman

When: Wed., June 1, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $38
One of Canada's most revered singer-songwriters, Bruce Cockburn has quietly flown under the radar in the United States aside from the occasional "hit" ("If I Had a Rocket Launcher," "Wondering Where the Lions Are"). Such is the respect for Cockburn's body of work that he's found a wide range of artists dipping into his deep canon, ranging from Ani DiFranco and the Jerry Garcia Band to fellow Canucks k.d. Lang and Barenaked Ladies. The Ottawa native's 31st studio album, Small Source of Comfort, proves he hasn't slowed up one scintilla. On this one he pays homage to Canadians killed in Middle East combat ("Each One Lost"), comes off like a poor man's Richard Thompson while musing about the complexities of modern life ("Called Me Back"), and imagines Richard Nixon getting reincarnated as a single mom in the most excellent "Call Me Rose." Violinist Jenny Scheinman guests and is also Cockburn's tourmate. Expect the duo to replicate their studio magic in a live setting on Wednesday, June 1, at Yoshi's (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $38.
