Broun Fellinis Play Led Zeppelin

When: Sat., Feb. 6, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: $10

Taking their cues from prog rock, jazz, and psychedelia, Broun Fellinis are one of the most weirdly appealing trios to emerge from the Bay Area music scene in recent years. "Weirdly" because their music isn't immediately accessible -- it features a lot of zigzaggy sax riffs, processed sounds, and drums that never quite lock into a groove. Yet that's also what makes their music so immediate. These musicians live by the credo that sounds are more interesting than notes or melodies (saxophonist David Boyce has said as much, from the bandstand), and that's part of what makes their performances so thoroughly transfixing. Not to mention they're all accomplished musicians in their own right. Boyce also plays with free-jazz group the Supplicants and Sila & the Afrofunk Experience. Drummer Kevin Carnes currently serves in the band for Tim Barsky'sBright River. Electric bassist Kirk Peterson has been a local staple for decades. There's no telling what to expect this Saturday, Feb. 6, when Broun Fellinis reinterpret the works of Led Zeppelin. If their 2007 Christmas album is any indication, it should be a funky tribute. Broun Fellinis perform at Coda Jazz Supper Club (1710 Mission St., San Francisco). 10 p.m., $10.
