Historical drama, Romance
A lustrous performance by actress Saoirse Ronan keys this gentle, sweet (but not cloyingly so) romance about a small-town Irish young woman who emigrates to the title New York City borough in the early 1950s. The life and times of Eilis Lacey – adapted by Nick Hornby from Colm Tóibin’s novel, and directed dreamily by John Crowley – is not only a triumph for Ronan in her first “grown-up” role (after Atonement, Hanna, et al.). It’s a valentine to America from the Irish point of view, “calm, civilized, and charming,” as Eilis describes her demeanor. Sympathetic character support by Jim Broadbent, Jessica Paré, Domhnall Gleeson, Julie Walters, and Emory Cohen as the Italian-American plumber who wants to walk her home. A beautiful, sentimental, wholly fanciful time capsule from somewhere over the rainbow (111 min.).
