Brittany Howard

When: Sat., Nov. 23, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $40
In 2018, Brittany Howard pulled aside her Alabama Shakes bandmates and told them she was facing writer’s block and needed to take time away from the band to soul search. This cocooning period eventually lead to her excellent solo debut LP, Jaime. It’s the most experimental record she’s ever done, which pushes the boundaries of soul, blues, psych-rock and funk. But more importantly, the songs on this record are the deepest she’s ever dug creatively. She wrote extensively about her childhood before ever penning a song. This journey provided the foundation of her work on Jaime. The album name, in fact, was inspired by her sister, who died from eye cancer at the age of 13. The record isn’t about her sister, but the name works perfectly in how it shows the uncomfortable depths she plundered to produce this gorgeous, cutting-edge record.
