Crime drama, Thriller
Rowan Joffe’s 2010 remake of John Boulting’s 1947 movie based on the 1938 Graham Greene novel, reset into a 1964 “mods and rockers” time frame, still contains the same basic seedy gangster flavor from before, with the same dramatic frustrations. The courtship of Pinkie the hood and Rose the waitress (Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough) is dry and unforgiving, even when Greene’s Catholic guilt is soft-pedaled. Better to concentrate on John Mathieson’s cinematography and the always radiant Helen Mirren, as the couple’s thwarted guardian angel. Adaptor-director Joffe (son of filmmaking Roland) gets most of the details right yet there’s something missing. Also with John Hurt and Phil Davis. (111 min.)
