Unnecessary further revisiting of the old PBS-TV mini-series about an English university student (Matthew Goode), circa late 1930s, getting caught in the gears of a decadent old family — first the gay son, then the straight daughter — and their preposterously large house in the country. Ham acting prizes to Ben Whishaw as the gay son (half Mick Jagger, half Anthony Perkins), Emma Thompson as the excessively religious matriarch, Ed Stoppard as the twitty older brother, and Joseph Beattie as the college queen. This Deluxe Executive Edition coffee table film is directed by maker-of-pastries Julian Jarrold (Becoming Jane) from a screenplay by Jeremy Brock and Andrew Davies, chewing over the novel by Evelyn Waugh. Hayley Atwell costars as the love interest (135 min.).
