Drama
Gorgeous cinematography meets weepiness in English director Sarah Gavron’s debut feature, the tragic tale of a Bangladesh woman imported to a council flat in London’s East End, where she suffers an arranged marriage, loneliness, homesickness, and piles of garment piece-work in front of her sewing machine. Indian actor Tannishtha Chatterjee supplies the tears as poor Nanjeen, with Satish Kaushik as her clueless blob of a husband and Christopher Simpson as her back-door man. The gorgeousness comes from Robbie Ryan’s shots of the lush village back home. This clash between the picturesque and the maudlin may cause vertigo in the unwary. Screenplay by Abi Morgan and Laura Jones (101 min.).
