Re: “The Great Compromise in Orinda

I disagree with zugzwanged. You can't stop growth. The population of the United States and the Bay Area is growing. The best thing to do is to put more people in areas served by Bart already, such as Orinda, Berkeley and Oakland. It is far worse to locate development in Antioch, Discovery Bay, Livermore, Tracy and Santa Rosa because it forces people to use their cars, creating air pollution, using pristine open space and degrading the quality of life. I was glad to see Wilder come and am also glad to see the efforts they have made to preserve the environment and quality of life in the area. Each time NIMBY folks in cities like Berkeley oppose a multi-family or small lot development in their jurisdiction, they force growth to occur in outlying areas, something that is very undesirable in the grander scheme. Our regional planning efforts through ABAG (Association of Bay Area Governments) are ineffective and we need to make an effort coordinate development, transportation, parks and infrastructure for the Greater Bay Area. This is the most ethical, responsible, logical and environmentally sensitive thing to do.
