Re: “City of Oakland Shuts Down Novella Carpenter's Urban Farmstand

The whole level of resources being committed to this issue is ridiculous. Has the City forgotten the multiple deadly fires killing dozens of people? And somehow the code enforcement resources of the city cannot bring those monstrosities into safe compliance and they have staff on Chard Patrol duty? (Yeh I know Planning and Building Code enforcement staff are not fire inspectors but fire code violations are very closely related to building violations. We need to put the Chard Patrol staff on loan to the Fire Department to work on core life safety inspections for the next couple years).

Re: “East Bay Assembly Candidate Will Spend Election Night in the Hospital

The lack of personal responsibility being taken by Candidate David Erlich is amazing. Running around as a typical uninformed Republican candidate talking about how the Affordable Care Act drove up his premiums to the unaffordable level of $3,000 a month to cover him, his wife and child. That might be true (though I doubt it) but much cheaper coverage is available through Covered CA. For example I am 14 years older than Erlich so my rates would be higher than his, and mine are $1,300/month for a Covered CA Kaiser Silver plan for my family of three. That's the total cost as I am also self employed. His cost claim is just plain wrong. Depending on his family income he might also qualify for Obamacare subsidies. But thats evil as we have been told ad nauseum by his ilk, so instead he is taking hundreds of thousands in charity care because he lacked the personal responsibility to make arrangements for his own insurance coverage. Maintaining coverage is now a legal responsibility for Mr Erlich under the ACA. As to Obamacare RAISING premiums as he claims, for our family it LOWERED them by $500/month. We reside in Northern Alameda County as does candidate Ehrlich so our coverage would also be available to him. I'm tired about all of the health insurance disinformation being spout by Republicans as it only serves to undermine a real success story that could have served Ehrlich well if he taken advantage of it. Hopefully others will not believe his wrong headed propaganda and fall victim to incredible hospital bills that await the uninsured.
