Brian Fies at Moe's Books Free One Day Only Staff Pick

When: Wed., April 10, 7-8 p.m. 2019
Comics artist Brian Fies and his wife, Karen, lost their Santa Rosa home and most of their possessions in the 2017 Tubbs fire. One of the first things he did in the aftermath was buy paper and pens and start drawing. His online comic, “A Fire Story,” was seen by more than 3 million people, and an animated version produced by KQED went on to win an Emmy Award. The author of “Mom’s Cancer,” Fies has expanded “A Fire Story” into a full-length graphic novel that captures not only his own brush with cataclysm but recounts the fire stories of his neighbors. With powerful artwork and well-observed prose, “A Fire Story” mixes journalism and memoir to demonstrate how close we all are to disaster.
