Brendan Perry (Dead Can Dance), Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins)

When: Sun., June 12, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $25
Like Mark Lanegan or Tindersticks'Stuart Staples, Brendan Perry has one of those immediately distinguishable voices -- deeply masculine, velvety smooth, and utterly enchanting. It's an instrument unto itself, so that seemingly any music behind it -- no matter how good -- will always merely be accompaniment. Having made his name as one half of the gothic duo Dead Can Dance, Perry went on to release a solo album, Eye of the Hunter, in 1999, an extremely ethereal, hypnotic, and sacred-sounding collection of songs -- extreme headphone music, if you will. Its follow-up more than ten years later, Ark, released in the US this year, is decidedly more eclectic and "upbeat" -- and by that I mean that there are drum-machine beats, synthesized sounds, and it doesn't sound like a soundtrack to one's ancient funeral. Despite the synthetic sounds, Perry's voice keeps it firmly grounded. It's damn near dance-able. Perry stops by Bimbo's 365 Club (1025 Columbus Ave., San Francisco) with the Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie on Sunday, June 12. 8 p.m., $25.
