Brass Menažeri

When: Fri., Jan. 29, 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $12

Oakland's Brass Menazeri is one of the most dynamic bands of the current Balkan revival. The nine-member ensemble plays its own jazzy style of gypsy music with a repertoire that suggests a whirlwind tour through Macedonia, Greece, and Serbia. With seven horns blaring away, and the driving percussion of drummer Briget Boyle, they explode across the stage with an uncontained, larger-than-life sound that's impossible to resist. Bring your dancing shoes. World music duo RoundMountain opens with its eclectic take on traditional music, playing rhythms from New Orleans, the Balkans, and West Africa. Brass Menazeri plays Friday, Jan. 29, at Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley). 9 p.m., $12. Ashkenaz.com
