Brandi Shearer

When: Thu., May 15, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

Raised on a farm in rural Oregon, inspired by blues singer Joan Armatrading, and honing her chops singing jazz and blues standards in small clubs in Hungary, San Francisco-based singer Brandi Shearer has finally come into her own. And she's being rewarded, as one of the first artists on the Amoeba Records label, and earning glowing reviews by national publications and a fan in her idol, Lucinda Williams. On her latest album, Close to Dark, Shearer offers a soundtrack to a female empowerment movie ("Yes, Yes, Yes"), a displaced country girl's lamentations ("Congratulations"), and recalls the dark sultriness of Norah Jones on the lonesome piano ballad "Lullabies." Shearer returns to the venue, Cafe du Nord, where she first met Amoeba founder Dave Prinz, on Thursday, May 15. With Quincy Coleman and Kate Walsh. 8 p.m., $10.
