Re: “Oakland Proposes Eliminating Parking Requirements for New Downtown Housing Developments

Their proposal mentions nothing about affordability. It just mentions that reduced parking requirements make development more attractive. That is a very market-rate based approach to development and the exact opposite of a progressive vision for affordable and sustainable development. Many people in West and East Oakland are working class and have families. BART is really expensive and its hard to fit a family of 4 on a bike.

This is Euro-Centric development values. Its time that the "Transit-Orientated" development boosters actually develop a socio-economic lens to see what working families are facing. Driving up the cost of transportation might make the new young white singles moving into Oakland happy (they can afford it), but Black and Brown families will bare the burden of this regressive development ideology.

San Francisco lowered its parking requirements a decade ago. Can anyone serious say with a straight face that lowered parking requirements lowered their housing prices?
