Re: “The Express’ 2014 Endorsements

Oakland Rising Action conducted a study of the candidates, their positions, actions and experience and ranked mayoral choices as 1) Siegel, 2) Quan and 3) Schaff. Siegel is the most progressive candidate and Quan, despite her missteps, has achieved a great deal. Schaff has become more progressive. Rebecca Kaplan is ineffective and inconsistent. Tuman has no relevant experience (he claims that being head of his academic department has prepared him to run the city of Oakland. As an academic, I find this laughable.) Bryan Parker is the big business candidate.

Re: “Waste Management Launches Referendum Drive to Win Back Oakland Garbage Contract

Waste Management is a huge global corporation with a documented history of criminal abuses including price-fixing, environmental and health violations, and labor lockouts. Their management is currently facing 13 felony criminal counts in Hawaii. They aggressively take over local companies using their massive resources and bully tactics like they are now doing in Oakland. While their paid goons misrepresent Oakland and claim to want to let the people decide they are simultaneously suing the city. I'm not a big fan of the City Council but I applaud them for standing up to this corporate criminal.
