In this friendly, light-touch kids’ drama from New Zealand, an eleven-year-old Maori boy (James Rolleston), circa 1984, manages to come of age despite the influence of his father Alamein, a newly released prisoner who never quite grew up. That’s writer-director Taika Waititi as the quixotic dad, but the movie really belongs to Rolleston’s Boy and his young mates, crazy for Michael Jackson and bored stiff with their tiny hometown. Their hopeful, honest faces outweigh the dialogue. Inspired by Waititi’s 2004 Oscar-nominated short, Two Cars, One Night. (84 min.)
