Re: “Oakland Cops Kill Rape Suspect

Some observations: 1. If a parolee, and trying to change his life why would he have a gun ( OBVIOUS violation of parole I'm sure,) 2. why would he run if had done nothing wrong (he MUST know by now that he will be caught,) and lastly, 3. even assuming that he did NOT shoot, but "discarded" his gun - the investigation will HAVE to show where he "discarded" his firearm and whether it was fired or not. Those who will try to say that cops will obscure that 3rd point should remember that it all happened too fast for them to come back and plant stuff - so please be reasonable here in your arguments. Given the recent high profile attention that is focused on local law enforcement officers and their behavior, we would hope/ assume that it would be incredibly stupid for an officer to shoot without just cause and a level head.

Re: “The Return to Public Schools

to answer John Doe with regard to percentages/ numbers about Oakland students who actually graduate from
4 year colleges - GOOD QUESTION SIR... however that means that we need to follow/track our students. I can
only tell you at this point, from my personal knowledge.. that I know of 2 FOR SURE Oakland Military Institute
2007 ( inaugural class) graduates who are now entering their 3rd year at WestPoint! If you ever doubted the
focus/discipline of any kids from Oakland? THIS should at least give you pause. These 2 cadets came from
admittedly a beleaguered school system and have thrived at one of our countries most challenging colleges.
Out of 11,000 qualified applicants, 1,300 were accepted.. and approximately 900 to 950 will ultimately graduate
in their class. OMI, and Oakland should be proud of our dedicated students, and committed to our public school
system. It DOES work... with the cooperation and focus of our students and families.

Re: “The Return to Public Schools

Families might also consider Oakland Charter Schools - Jerry Brown's Oakland Military Institute's 3rd graduating class ( as has the previous 2 ) has approximately an 80% record of graduates going on to attend 4 year colleges. Of this year's class of 40, 15 will be attenting Cal. State East Bay; 3 UC Davis; 1 UC San Diego; 1 UCLA; 1 UCSC among many others! WHAT A COUP! AGE QUOD AGIS OMI yet again!

Re: “Measure Y and the Oakland Budget Mess

One has to wonder why the Mayor has refused to trim "HIS" office's budget, particularly after having hired several additional staff positions upon election ( most of whom earn more than Jerry Brown did as Mayor,) while passing on the cuts to all other city departments. Also, if the City Council TRULY wanted to show their concern and make a gesture of sincerity, it could vote to not only NOT take its automatic salary raise, but perhaps, also vote in a slight cut in pay - since it has no problem cutting wages of all other city programs and salaries. Methinks I've heard SOMEWHERE? Lead by EXAMPLE. Would that we ever see it exemplified by our city leaders during these times. Shame on all of them.

Re: “Oakland Police Are Still in Trouble

Hello? Mr. Gannon... could you possibly tell me who SHOULD be named as "interim Police Chief?" while the supposed national search for
a new chief proceeds? Given the lack of speed of action from the Mayor with regard to replacement of Ms. Edgerly's position - we can only be thankful
that someone from within OPD has been given the position.. - ( not to mention that he accepted it ! what a THANKLESS job!) I'm so tired of your
publication's and your journalists ranting on all that is Oakland. It irked me no end that you chose to assign a reporter ( Orquedia Price) to follow a
new cadet at Jerry Brown's school back in 2001.. only to have a 6 or 7 page RAG story come out about OMI ( of course that cadet was MINE ,) but to
consistently see the incredibly biased rude opinionated articles that both you and Chris Thompson produce makes me ill. It would be a novelty to see
something POSITIVE ever mentioned in one of your columns - I might expire upon reading it EGADS! I invite you to contact me anytime via email to
discuss my obvious issues with you... btw... I happen to also be? Chair of Oakland's CPRB.

Re: “Arrests Are Down, and Crime Is Up

One reason that Oakland has fewer investigators and specific crime units is that they've had to redirect veteran officers to train all of the novice cops who have just graduated from the Academy, per prior voter measure requirements. These are fall-outs of issues determined long before now - novice cops have to be trained/supervised on duty after having graduated, and thus Oakland loses seasoned specialized unit cops to accomplish this. You have better/ alternative idea? I'm sure OPD would much appreciate your brilliant solutions.

Re: “Crimes Against Immigrants Provoke Call for More Police

There are some issues in this article that concern me. First of all - Ana Diaz and others should be aware that you should NEVER hang up once you've dialed 911 - something that is stated clearly in English and Spanish I believe. 911 dispatchers waste precious time calling back hang-ups that could be spent responding to other emergencies. Additionally, I truly believe that 911 clearly gives options in Spanish, and will route calls to someone who speaks the language of the caller. Once again I agree with eastbay_jose - this account is a bit far-fetched and typical of EastBay Express' historical bashing of anything Oakland. Why didn't the reporter look into 911 policy - which should have been an obvious trigger issue here - bilingual/ not bilingual?
