Bonnie and Clyde

When: Aug. 27-Sept. 29 2013
Price: $8-$30
In this resurrection of the infamous, Depression-era duo’s story, playwright Adam Peck homes in on one day in the couple’s life, shortly before they are killed during a shootout with cops. Peck and director Mark Jackson do an impressive job of clearing away the gauzy romanticism that has come to surround the couple’s mythology, and our own cultural understandings of romance, crime, and tragedy. The play — now in production at The Ashby Stage (1901 Ashby Ave., Berkeley) — is riveting throughout its eighty-minute run, with palpable chemistry by the leads, Joe Estlack and Megan Trout. In a contemporary spin, the lovers’ more fraught moments are bracketed by poetic and charged dance sequences, choreographed by Kimberley Dooley, which are at turns frantic, poppy, and sensuous. With humor and humanity, Shotgun Players’ drama brings a buoyant and devastating energy to the task of making Bonnie and Clyde’s legend mortal once more.
