Drama, Suspense/Thriller
Frisky CIA agent Leonardo DiCaprio takes a beating on the job in the Middle East while his out-of-shape boss Russell Crowe pulls the strings and issues epigrams from back in Langley. Their act, devoid of the slightest chemistry, is just another old-cop/young-cop routine decked with mock-sophisticated intrigue, a love interest (Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani), a smooth Jordanian fixer (scene-stealing Mark Strong), and plenty of the old ultra-violence. Director Ridley Scott gives it the post-Blackhawk Down treatment, complete with a rationale Dick Cheney would applaud — do it to them before they can do it to us — courtesy William (The Departed) Monahan's screenplay from the novel by rightwing columnist David Ignatius. Makes Syriana look like the Gilgamesh (128 min.).
