Bobby Black “Moonlight in Hawaii”

Steel guitar legend Bobby Black has played with dozens of the brightest stars in country music, Western swing and country rock, but he’s always nursed a love of Hawaiian music. It’s a passion sparked in the 1940s by childhood visits to the Fairmount Hotel’s Tonga Room, where he was entranced by steel guitar maestro Sol K. Bright. Over the years he’s performed with many iconic Hawaiian musicians, and in 2012 he even released his own album of Hawaiian steel guitar instrumentals, Steel Guitar Paradise. Revisiting his love of the lilting hapa-haole sound, he’s joined by Crying Time guitarist Myles Boisen, Cheap Suit Serenaders multi-instrumentalist Tony Marcus, special guest vocalists Sheilani Alix, Jill Rogers, and Hawaiian music artists Casey and Nadine Vargas. The talent-packed evening also includes an opening set by the Bay Area Hawaiian band Haopinaka, who have performed at Aloha festivals, hula competitions, and hundreds of backyard luaus over the past two decades, and hula performances by Leilani Chow, Kalena Gregory, Casey Vargas, and others. Mar. 9, 8 p.m., $10-18, The Back Room, 1984 Bonita Ave., Berkeley,
