Re: “The Alley

Rod Dibble died in December of 2017 There are new musicians and the place still is a blast! The Alley steak special top sirloin dinner for $16+ is not too shabby partnered with the $8 Martini

Re: “The East Bay's Tow Hustle

how about the scam of getting your stolen car back ! my son"s car was stolen in Berkeley a few years ago Soon afterward he got a call from Richmond police that it had been found parked on a city street and we had 1 hour to get it. It was impossible to make in time took us 2 hours to get to Richmond police headquarters only to find that they had had the car towed. We got ripped off x2 once by the thief & again by the towing company for close to $400 (& his battery was stolen so we had to rush out to buy one so that extra fees would not be assessed for leaving the car overnight.) I wrote to the Richmond city council about the rip off & got a response from one of the council members who had similar outrage over the same type of event. She contacted me & had the incident recorded in The Contra Costa Times in a letter to the editor. What a scam!!

Re: “Alice Waters Releases Long-Awaited Memoir

On page 254 Alice mistakenly listed me (Bob Waks) as one of the founders of the Cheeseboard Collective I was hired there by Elizabeth & Sahag Avedisian in 1968, 1 year after it opened, & in 1971 it was sold to the staff and officially became a worker owned collective with all members receiving equal pay & participating in the stores' management. I contacted Alice today (9/7/17) & she will be issuing a retraction to rectify this innocent memory lapse.

Re: “The Advocate's Kitchen Is on Fire

This combines 2 visits: the 1st Friday Oct 2, (fantastic!) & then Monday the 5th (disappointing)...the same 2 dishes wildly different..Friday: the tables favorite 2 dishes: the pork eggplant flatbread perfect chewy flavorful dough topped with wonderfully smokey eggplant & savory ground pork was sent back Monday..the pork cold..Scott, our excellent waiter, replaced it and the squid plancha dish (also cold). Even so, those 2 dishes which had been so great Friday were, even when redone, not nearly as complex, flavorful or well executed Monday. The little tarragon gem salad was, on the other hand, just as good. Tomato salad on Friday was boring & miniscule. Friday's bavette steak was well cooked though not as beefy tasting as I like and the vege melange (though tasty) as its side didn't really make sense to me.The lamb ragu & papardelle Monday was fair with scant amounts of lamb but not really a ragu IMHO but a loose separate mixture of tomatoes etc & small chunks of lamb ....also the garbanzo fritters were not nearly as crispy Monday even although the flavor was fine... the jury's still more thing..Fridays tattooed ponytailed waitress didn't seem into her work that air of indifference and messed up our drink order...
