Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band

When: Wed., Dec. 21, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $72.50-$99

Since he's jumping the shark with songs like "Shakedown" and "Old Time Rock and Roll" and shilling for Chevys, it's quite easy to dismiss Bob Seger. And the fact that he went on a self-imposed exile to raise his kids hasn't done anything to enhance Seger's visibility beyond those unfortunate pop culture benchmarks. But truth be told, Michigan's favorite son is part of the generation of classic heartland rockers whose ranks include Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and yes, Bruce Springsteen. If you want to start a fight, mention Seger being on the level of Springsteen within earshot of Boss devotees. (Never mind the fact that New Jersey's unofficial working-class hero never took any of this imagined rivalry to heart, going so far as to appear onstage at Seger's recent MadisonSquareGarden show.) So while the online chatboard wars heat up, the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is coming out of semi-retirement just as the two-disc anthology Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets hits the streets. He'll be digging deep into his catalogue when at  Oracle Arena (7000 Coliseum Way, Oakland) on Wednesday, Dec. 21. 7:30 p.m., $72.50-$99.
