Back and forth in time we go with a lower-middle-class, not terribly bright man and woman as their love story ebbs and flows, tenderly at first, then violently. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams put on overbearing displays of acting as Dean and Cindy – Williams is more appealing – but there’s something cold and sterile about this. Director Derek Cianfrance’s claustrophobic closeups and medium closeups may be intended to convey intimacy but they only reinforce the artificiality of the screenplay, by Cianfrance, Joey Curtis, and Cami Delavigne. Sub-Cassavetes all the way. (120 min.)
