Action/Adventure, Horror, Suspense/Thriller
Silly martial arts fantasy nevertheless has several good fight scenes. A 16th-century Japanese samurai “demon hunter” reincarnates in 1970 as a handy-with-the-blade sixteen-year-old schoolgirl named Saya (Gianna Jun) in order to battle “the oldest, vilest demon of all,” Onigen (Koyuki), in and around a US Air Force base near Tokyo. Horrible dialogue, worse acting, but producer Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) must have had some influence on the fanciful, well staged combats. Forget about the CIA subplot. This live-action remake of a shorter anime of the same title is written by the original screenwriters, Kenji Kamiyama and Katsuya Terada, and directed by Chris Nahon. Shot on location in China and Argentina, not Japan (91 min.).
