Blood Orange at Fox Theater

Dev Hynes has been working professionally in music for more than a decade. The British singer-songwriter has spent much of that time working with artists such as Solange, Haim, Florence and the Machine, and Blondie. He played guitar and keys in U.K. dance-punk band Test Icicles, and then released albums under the name Lightspeed Champion. All of it was good. But none of it has compared to his work as Blood Orange. His third record, Freetown Sound, which he released last year, takes elements and production styles from '90s R&B, electro-funk, and new wave and gives them intense emotions and dynamics. Compared to Blood Orange's previous album, 2013's Cupid Deluxe, which dealt with heartbreak and relationships, Freetown Sound tackles issues related to Black identity. On the opening track, Ashlee Haze, in near tears, says that when she doesn't feel pretty she listens to Missy Elliot's pop that pop that, jiggle that fat because "representation is important." — Aaron Carnes
