Block Movement Party

When: Sat., April 5, 9 p.m. 2008
Price: $7-$15

Known for incisive political reporting on everything from city hall protests in Chicago to Cynthia McKinney's presidential campaign, KPFA's Block Report radio show also features arts and cultural affairs coverage from a perspective you don't often see in mainstream media -- placing the spotlight on lesser-known artists rather than headline-grabbers. Many people who wind up on the Block Report -- among them former Hobo Junction diva Mahasin and West Oakland rapper J. Stalin -- have prodigious talent and a healthy buzz on the streets, though in wider circles they haven't quite caught on. Whatever the reason, they're still worth checking out. See for yourself on Saturday, April 5 at Block Movement Party, featuring performances by Mahasin, Chela Simone, Ahsabi Monique, Magyore, and DJ Ledis, plus a lecture from Prisoners of Conscience Committee Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. at Cellspace (2050 Bryant St., San Francisco). 9 p.m., $7-$15.
