Drama, War
Warm and optimistic but also emotionally substantial, this nostalgic Latino family story follows the wonder years of a boy named Antonio Márez (Luke Ganalon), whose relationship with an elderly family friend, the curandera Ultima (Miriam Colon), gives him a bounty of knowledge about human nature, including how to deal with a family of witches in their small New Mexico town, circa 1944. Director Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress, One False Move) provides just the right touches, erring only slightly on the Hallmark side. Nice perfs by Colon, the kid Ganalon, and Benito Martinez as Antonio’s father. Franklin adapted the screenplay from the novel by Rudolfo Anaya. (106 min.)
