Re: “Politicians Go to Bat for BART Unions

Oh, where do I start?

1st, we are not in a cooling off period. Because of an all day session on Saturday, yes all day, the District, ATU & SEIU agreed to a 9 day contract extension. We've been putting in 12 to 16 hours days trying to get this settled. We understand the Dristict's budget woes, be we also understand how the District got there, it wasn't because of the unions either. BART focuses more on expanding and construction, then it does about the core system. It's evident in the current budget, the District has budgeted over 50% of it's total expenses on Capital Projects or construction projects.

2nd, "the audacity to demand a 3 percent raise", the unions are using the Districts numbers and we built into a total contract proposal, with concessions, a pay raise, in other words, we were paying for our own pay raise. Is there something wrong with that?

In closing, is it not ok for the unions to use what political connections they have but it's ok for the District to use theirs? They've been hammering us in the press and with their connections in Sacramento and Washington for months, but when we finally contact our political allies, you cry "foul", last I checked, this was the USA and we were all free to associate with who we want. It would be nice if reporters would, just once, get the whole story...
