Re: “Transparency's Unlikely Foe

SEIU should be the last people to oppose SB 52 because it just makes them look bad to their own rank-and-file members. If you ask members of that union, not the leadership, most will tell you that they really resent having their union dues being diverted into political campaigns instead of being used to provide much-needed services and representation, which is supposed to be what union dues are paid for in the first place.

An example of this disconnect between union leadership and rank-and-file would be in the case of in-home care (a.k.a. IHSS), which provides home care services for disabled and seniors in California. Most homecare workers will openly tell you that they would prefer their union to advocate for higher wages and benefits for home care workers instead of helping some candidate get elected or some ballot proposition gets passed.

Most of them feel that SEIU, the union that represents homecare workers, is greatly letting them down by not doing more to protect their jobs and get them better wages and benefits for the very important jobs that they do in helping California's disabled and seniors have better lives and live independently in the community.

Re: “Thursday Must Reads: OPD Ordered to Reinstate Cop Who Shot at Scott Olsen; Black BART Workers Subjected to Racist, Violent Threats

The public has every right to know why the OPD officer who recklessly fired a flash-bang at people were trying to help a fallen comrade was reinstated.

The excuse of, "he was just following orders" is not in any way acceptable. Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg trials used the same defense for their actions, but it didn't work. Why should it work in Oakland, or anywhere in the United States?

Re: “It's Time to End the Death Penalty Nightmare

The time has come to end the death penalty in California, once and for all. The fact that both Gov. Jerry Brown and Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris are dragging their feet, even after a Republican appointed judge ruled it unconstitutional, is just more evidence that both of these two elected officials are guilty of betraying their credentials as liberals.

What true liberal, which is how both Brown and Harris have always identified themselves, tolerates executing anyone? The anti-death penalty stance has always been a mainstay for any person calling themselves a liberal.

Another thing, I don't see how sentencing a convicted murderer to spend the rest of their life in prison without the chance for parole is allowing him to get away with anything. I can't imagine a worse punishment than to spend the rest of my life locked away in an 8' x 10' room until I died. How is that possibly being "soft on crime?"
