Action, Adventure, Fantasy
For his 100th film as a director, Japanese action and horror auteur Miike Takashi (Audition, Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins) takes a relatively contemplative path through a familiar tale, as a bewitched samurai named Manji (Kimura Takaya) helps an adolescent girl (Sugisaki Hana) avenge the death of her parents. In Miike’s world, a “contemplative” approach means acres of slaughtered corpses, the hideously disfigured Manji, and an 800-year-old witch who curses him by making him immortal. Aside from the obvious glee he takes in hacking hundreds of foes, Manji’s adventure is unremittingly somber. Screenplay by Samura Hiroaki and Oishi Tetsuya (151 min., 2017, rated R)
