Black Sabbath

When: Mon., Aug. 26, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $31-$131
Um, this band is playing Shoreline Amphitheater (1 Amphitheatre Pkwy., Mountain View) on Monday. Maybe you’ve heard of it. BLACK SABBATH. HOLY &*@#. The band is on tour (maybe its last, according to bassist Geezer Butler) to support 13, its nineteenth studio album and first in 35 years, which it released in June. While original drummer Bill Ward was initially supposed to be part of the reunion, he ultimately refused to take part because of contractual issues (Rage Against the Machine’s Brad Wilk replaced him); the rest of the band, however — Ozzy, guitarist Tommy Iommi (who recently won his battle against lymphoma), and Butler — are on board. Surprisingly, 13 (produced by Rick Rubin) does not sound like the over-produced metal album you might expect from such a mega-successful group. In an interview with Chicago Sun-Times, Butler said Rubin helped steer the band back to its more “avant-garde” roots: Accordingly, 13 is doomy, dark, riff-heavy, and minimalist by modern standards. It should pair well with the classics.
