Filmmaker Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Creed) delivers a Hollywood touchstone: The first Black-themed superhero spectacle, written and directed by Black people (Coogler and writer Joe Robert Cole, adapting the Marvels Comics adventure), with a large, well chosen Black cast – including Chadwick Boseman as the title hero, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Forest Whitaker, et al. – portraying the inhabitants of the fictional African country of Wakanda, home of the most valuable mineral on earth. It’s a colorful, unapologetically ethnic, hyper-energetic comic-book romp, with all the usual CGI money shots. Most of the movie’s pleasures are obvious ones, but it’s gratifying to see social justice as a plot motivation (134 min., 2018, rated PG-13)
