San Diego trio Grand Ole Party is led by drummer/singer Kristin Gundred, a young woman with a voice that has hints of Janis Joplin, Mae West, and Tracy Nelson. She can move from a seductive purr to a banshee's wail with startling ease. Guitarist Paul Labno's sparse approach combines choppy chords and short, exciting melodic lines, and Mike Krechnyak's bass provides the forward momentum in tandem with Gundred's solid drumming. The crew eschews the usual indie rock poses for a basic blues/rock sound that's refreshing in its powerful simplicity. They drop a bit of reggae into the mix, but most of their stuff is solid, down-home rock, bluesy and swampy, with Gundred's vocals delivering the emotion lacking in so much modern rock. Grand Ole Party appears withBlack Lips and Mika Miko on Monday, Oct. 6 and Tuesday, Oct. 7 at Great American Music Hall (859 O'Farrell St., San Francisco). 8 p.m., $15, $17. GAMH.com
