Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears

When: Sat., May 16, 9 p.m. 2009
Price: $17

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears channel the vibes of 1965 with bedrock sounds that combine early funk, blues, and R&B into a smoking package of high-octane roots-rock thrills. Lewis looks like a hybrid of Chris Rock and Will Smith, and shrieks with a sexy, dangerous, show-stopping charisma. The Austin-based band created a buzz at 2007's SXSW and Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!, their major label debut, sparks and smokes like the fuse on a stick of dynamite. The band can stop and start on a dime, like all fine soul outfits, and the have the chops to deliver "Please Part Two," an obvious homage to James Brown's classic "Please, Please, Please," with frightening power. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears open for Lucero and will tear the roof off of Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Saturday, May 16. 9 p.m., $17.
