Black is the new green for the Oakland A's

Repainting the deck furniture on the Titanic is the fresh new look for the Oakland A's upon entering the '08 season. On Saturday, the locals took the field for Fan Fest in their new black togs. Based on the photos published in the Chronicle Friday (in black and white!) and Saturday (huddled together in the rain) even the ballplayers look pretty glum about it.

Naturally, it's all about marketing. If you want to look like a big leaguer, you've got to get the authentic uni. The rather funereal look seems just about right for the season ahead. I'm not certain that we have to dress like we're in mourning in January, but it's never too late I suppose to get ready for the evenings ahead.

In 2000, the A's went with a black jersey top, and they threw them out by 2001. Unless management is willing to splurge on new batting helmets, fans will again be tormented with the sartorial clash of dark green helmets and black jerseys. Maybe that's part of the plan - it might keep people's eyes off the product on the field and rushing toward the concession booth to look nostalgically at our fine green jerseys from days gone by.

A dark uniform for dark times.
