Black Choreographers Festival

When: Sat., Feb. 9, 8 p.m. and Sun., Feb. 10, 4 p.m. 2013
Price: $10-$20

Now in its ninth year, the annual Black Choreographers Festival: Here & Now celebrates African-American arts and culture through performances by an international roster of dance artists, plus master classes, symposia, and mentoring for young dancers and up-and-coming dance makers. Held on three consecutive weekends, the festival opens on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9-10, at the Laney College Theater (900 Fallon St., Oakland). Saturday's performance honors the fortieth anniversary of Oakland's Dimensions Dance Theater and its artistic director, Deborah Vaughan, who has guided the company to national renown. Sunday's family matinee features pre-professional youth companies performing works by Reginald Ray Savage, Latanya d. Tigner, Phylicia Stroud, and other leading African-American choreographers. The following two weekends feature works by Camille A. Brown, Raissa Simpson, Oakland-based Antoine Hunter, and many more at Dance Mission Theater (3316 24th St., San Francisco; see website for times). Sat. 8 p.m., Sun. 4 p.m.; $10-$20. 1-866-898-2272 or BCFHereAndNow.com
