Bill Talen and Savitri D.: "The Reverend Billy Project: From Rehearsal Hall to Super Mall with the Church of Life After Shopping"

When: Wed., Sept. 21, 7 p.m. 2011
RevBilly.com

Sometime in the late Nineties, Bill Talen arrived in Times Square with a white suit and a megaphone and began delivering revival-style screeds against consumerism, capitalism, and corporate greed -- all in character as Reverend Billy, a larger-than-life evangelist street preacher, and occasionally with the help of a 35-member chorus and a seven-member backing band. In an era before flashmobs, The Colbert Report, and Banksy, it was an ingenious and bold act of political theater. In his new book, Talen, along with wife and co-conspirator Savitri D., details the history and ethos of the Reverend Billy Project; together they read at Revolution Books (2425 Channing Way., Berkeley), on Wednesday, Sept. 21. 7 p.m., free. 510-848-1196 or RevolutionBooks.org
