Adventure, Drama
Whale-rescue feel-gooder benefits greatly from the presence of Drew Barrymore, as a Greenpeace activist helping to free three gray whales trapped in the ice at the northern tip of Alaska. In fact, director Ken Kwapis’ charmingly satirical animal show – based on a real-life 1988 incident – holds a number of human-actor aces in the hole: John Krasinski as a sympathetic TV newsman, Ted Danson as a greedy oil man, Kristen Bell as a slightly less sympathetic TV newswoman, Dermot Mulroney as a grumpy military officer, and yes, that’s the vastly underutilized James LeGros as Karl Hootkin, inventor of the Hootkin 450 De-Icer that saves Fred, Wilma, and Bamm-Bamm (the threatened Cetaceans) when their air hole threatens to freeze over. The screenplay is by Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, adapted from a book by Thomas Rose. (107 min.)
