Re: “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

The unabashed racism in these comments is absolutely disgusting. I'm sure the same people spouting it would be the first to claim that "racism is over" simply because we have a black president and the Civil Rights Movement happened more than 40 years ago.

The fools yammering on about IQ ought to know that IQ does not measure any sort of biologically inherent intelligence; it reflects all sorts of cultural influences, including the questions of the test itself. Another such influence is -- and you can Google it -- the school-to-prison pipeline.

Sure, bring up the whole "actin' white" thing. It fails to recognize that plenty of whites belittle academic achievement as well. This is a profoundly anti-intellectual country. Plenty of white kids who are really not that bright manage to be passed every school year, and they wind up in college taking remedial English and math. However, nobody regards this as a racial problem.

And nobody here is bringing up the elephant in the room -- that this short-sighted attempt to save money has happened because conservatives have been systematically defunding the schools for three decades now. It's not a coincidence that this got underway after desegregation.

For the record, I'm white. However, I've tried to develop empathy, which is as important in life as intellect. Conservatives sneer at the concept because it gets in the way of their belief that they're better than others and that their good fortune is entirely due to their own efforts.
