It’s often argued — and for good reason, because it’s true — that Latinos are underrepresented in today’s motion pictures. In some sick, twisted, mirror universe, Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua was intended to rectify that by casting, it seems, every single celebrity of Mexican and passable Mexican descent working in and around Hollywood today. Plus Drew Barrymore in the lead. She’s not Latina, of course, but she’s family-friendly. Chihuahua, the story of a pampered Beverly Hills dog lost in her dirty ancestral homeland, is too — as long as you overlook the inadvertent stereotyping. Oh, and the inadvertent argument that a pampered, do-nothing Paris Hilton lifestyle, despite what our heroine learns while slumming it, is still where you want to end up (91 min.).
